ALUMNI OF ETSAR IN THE WORLD
To become an architecture student of the School of Reus, it is advisable to have demonstrated interest for artistic and sensitive issues, usually complemented with a capacity for technical matters that will be applied throughout the career. Among the artistic issues we need to highlight the abilities for drawing and painting in different modes, interest in the visual aspects of contemporary culture, especially photography and film, and knowledge of the history of art, mainly about aspects linked with architectural heritage. Of the technical aspects, we emphasize the need to have studied technical drawing, facility for mathematical calculations and geometry and interest in physical and environmental phenomena. We should also note that the initial weaknesses can be widely compensated with the effort and dedication of the student.
The architects perform architectural projects, in other words generate ideas that allow the inhabiting of a space with certain uses, commissioned by private or public clients.
In the process of project development there are different stages:
First, we perform the development of an idea and determine and distribute spaces. This is what is known as basic design development.
Second, performance of calculations, definition of details either technical or design and necessary corrections are performed to permit taking the primary ideas to reality. This is known as construction documents.
Lastly, the materialization of the building and its supervision completes the work of the architect.
This process can determine career opportunities since the specialization in different areas of knowledge that are taught during the studies can define various architect profiles.
For architects, construction and real estate companies, the field of structural and MEP calculations of a building, can have specialists. On the other hand, there are also architects who know more about the field of architecture development, and thus, can apply and adapt technical solutions with more defined criteria.
The areas of work of the architect are very diverse. Until recently, the most common way to work as an architect was the free exercise of the profession. The architect established his office and performed commissions for both private individuals as well as for the public administration. Currently, this manner of working in the profession is done from the perspective of sharing work with other professionals or colleagues specializing in different areas of architecture.
Some of these specialties within architecture and construction are the following:
The restoration and rehabilitation of buildings.
The calculation of structures.
The calculation and design of MEP.
The urban planning and urban environment of the building.
Interior design and furniture design.
Legal architecture, with its branches of appraisals of buildings, determination causes and pathologies of a building and its solutions.
The valuation of real state.
The interpretation of deeds and other documents related to the building.
All these specialties can be performed both from the private exercise of the profession and as an employee in private companies or government agencies, such as local, regional or state administrations.
Teaching and research are also areas of activity for the architect, from the teaching of drawing in schools and secondary institutions to the development of research projects in the universities with the collaboration of companies.
